Bob's professional playing and managing
career began just five years after the end of the Civil War! He had modest
statistics as a batsman, but did happen to collect one of the finest nicknames
of the 19th century—"Death to Flying Things." He managed the Mets for
parts of two seasons. He is also reputed to be the first switch-hitter in
