Candy Nelson
John W. Nelson
Batted: Left
Threw: Right
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 145 lbs.
Born: March 14, 1849 in Portland, ME
Died: September 4, 1910 in Brooklyn, NY
Like so many of the original Mets, he was
born in New York and died in New York. In between, he played some pretty good
shortstop for them, being named their Hitter of the Year for the inaugural
season of 1883. In the seven seasons before joining the Mets, Candy played a
total of only 71 games in the big leagues, but then he played in virtually
every one of the Mets games for the next three years! He went on to become one
of only a handful to participate in every season of the Mets' existence. The
card pictured is from the Old Judge set; it is most definitely not in my
collection.
