Darby had a fine rookie season for the 1887 Metropolitans, then went on to play five more solid seasons for two Brooklyn clubs. A year later, 29-year-old Darby was dead of consumption. Second on the '87 Mets with his 49 steals, he tallied as many as 91 thefts in 1889. He also scored 146 runs that season, and was a three-time .300 hitter. Pictured here is Darby's card in the 1990 Target Dodgers set. The card pictured at the bottom of this page is from the Old Judge set; it is most definitely not in my collection.
