As thin as the Mets' pitching staffs were in the early 1960s, you have to look at Grover Powell's statistics from his only big-league season and ask yourself, "Why didn't he get another chance?" A little more research informed me that he hurt his arm during winter ball in Venezuela following the '63 season.  He recovered enough to record one more really good season in the minors, going 16-7 with a 2.68 ERA in 195 innings in 1968, but he never made it back to the majors.  He died of leukemia at the tender age of 44 in 1985.  Shown here on his 1964 Topps card.
