Bill Holbert
William Henry Holbert
Batted: Right
Threw: Right
Height: unknown
Weight: 197 lbs.
Born: March 14, 1855 in Baltimore, MD
Died: March 20, 1935 in Laurel, MD
Bill was reputed to be a fine defensive backstop, and judging from his
batting statistics, it must have been true. Actually, he was recently named the
all-time defensive catcher for the American Association; he spent more time
behind the plate than any of the other original Mets. He also apparently holds
the all-time record for most plate appearances without ever hitting a single
home run. The picture at the right comes courtesy of Clifford Blau's fine
Metropolitans website. The card shown below is courtesy of M. P. Farris' online
Old Judge Museum.
