Dude Esterbrook
Thomas John Esterbrook
Batted: Right
Threw: Right
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 167 lbs.
Born: June 9, 1857 in Staten Island, NY
Died: April 30, 1901 in Middletown, NY
Dude played third base for the original 1883 Metropolitans, and had an
outstanding year the next season (which enabled him to nose past Frank
Hankinson as the old Mets' all-time third baseman). His end may have been more
celebrated than his career, though. Following his playing days, Dude developed
some rather peculiar personal habits, and in 1901 was en route to a mental
institution via train, when he leapt from the moving train to his death. Shown
here is Dude's card from the 1994 set called Origins of Baseball. At the bottom
of this page there is a Kalamazoo Bats card pictured, courtesy of the Cycleback
Museum.
