Jim Mutrie
James J. "Truthful Jim" Mutrie
Born: June 13, 1851 in Chelsea, MA
Died: January 24, 1938 in New York, NY
One of the prime movers in establishing the
New York franchise, Jim managed the Metropolitans to their American Association
championship in 1884. Even though Truthful Jim's duties as a manager weren't
precisely what they are today (he was more like a business manager than a field
manager), he was still credited with the victories the Mets racked up, as well
as those that the Giants did for him for most of the next decade. In addition
to the Mets' AA championship, Mutrie also led the New York National Leaguers to
two World Championships, and compiled one of the highest managerial winning
percentages in all of baseball history! His Old Judge card is pictured here,
courtesy of the Library of Congress, and another one is shown below. To view an extensive biography for Mr.
