Stump Weidman
George Edward Weidman
Batted: Right
Threw: Right
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 165 lbs.
Born: February 17, 1861 in Rochester, NY
Died: March 3, 1905 in New York, NY
Stump was a two-time twenty-game winner,
which sounds fairly impressive until you consider that he lost twenty
games five years in a row, including a high of 36 losses in 1886! Still, he ate
up a lot of innings, and was a valued member of the Detroit staff, pitching six
years for them in an age where it was rare to play for the same club three
years in a row. With the Mets, he was a little bit better than their average
pitcher for 1887, in terms of both Winning Percentage and Earned Run Average;
he also pitched the season's only shutout. His Old Judge card is pictured here,
courtesy of the Library of Congress, and another one is shown below.
