Pumpsie Green

Elijah Jerry Green
Batted: Both
Threw: Right
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 175 lbs.
Born: Oct 27, 1933 in Oakland, CA
Signed: purchased by the Boston Red Sox from Stockton, February 1956
Acquired: traded from the Red Sox with
Tracy Stallard and a player to be named later (Al Moran) for Felix Mantilla, December 1962
Died: July 17, 2019 in San Leandro, CA

His given name was "Elijah" but they called him "Pumpsie." This is the right choice if you are a slender backup second-baseman, but not if you are an Old Testament prophet. "And the word of the Lord came to Pumpsie the Tishbite…?" I just can't see it. The card shown here is from the 1960 Topps set; when Pumpsie debuted in 1959, he became the first black player to ever take the field for the Boston Red Sox (the last team in the big leagues to integrate).

This is a list of the Pumpsie Green cards that I already have in my collection. If you have any cards that are not listed here, and you are willing to donate or trade them, contact me at Rounding Third.  Items that are struck through are no longer a part of the Rounding Third collection, having been sold for charity.

"Almost the first thing people do is ask me how I got my nickname. I figure eight million people have asked me so far, almost half of them sportswriters. When I get out of baseball I'm gonna write a book entitled, 'How I Got the Name of Pumpsie' and sell a million copies at a dollar apiece."
