Cleon Jones
Cleon Joseph Jones
Batted: Right
Threw: Left
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 200 lbs.
Born: August 4, 1942 in Plateau, AL
Signed: 1963 by the Mets
Departed: released, July 1975
Cleon is best known as the left fielder on
the 1969 World Champions, and it is also well-known that he held (for nearly 30
years) the record for the highest Mets batting average ever, with his .340 in
'69. His average of .319 two years later was also the second-highest Mets
average ever for many seasons. Lesser-known facts about Cleon's significance at
Shea include these: He led the Mets in steals four seasons in a row, and also in on-base percentage four years in a row. He led
the club in batting and in slugging percentage four different times, and in
runs, hits, doubles, and triples three times each. He was tops
in RBIs and total bases twice each, and even led the club in home runs one
season. Cleon is shown here on his 1970 Kellogg's card. Below the stats box are
cards from Cleon's entire career. And
below those cards is a link to the SABR website, where you can find a good
biography on Mr. Jones; just click on the banner.

This is a list of the cards of this player
that I had in my Mets collection before I transferred the ownership of said
collection to another diligent and capable Mets fan. The cards that are listed
in light gray print and struck through are cards that were sold for charity
prior to my divestiture. The cards
listed in white text are the ones that still
remained until that final deal. Items listed in green I kept out of the deal,
just so I'd have something to display in my office and den. At the bottom and listed in orange text are
cards that I picked up after the dealing was done, in order
to maintain a certain continuity at this site; that is, so I'd have a
card to show you at the top of the page, and maybe in the autographs and
game-used areas. If an orange card is
struck through, it has also departed the collection. I’m still accepting donations, should you
feel so moved. Contact me by following
