Tony's most famous New York minute occurred not as a member of the
Mets or the Yankees, but as a member of the Baltimore Orioles in the 1996 AL
Playoffs. He was the outfielder waiting to catch the fly ball at the fence when
a young fan reached out and plucked the ball from the sky, resulting in a
Yankee home run and victory. Later on Tony played for the Yankees briefly,
spent some time in Japan, and resurfaced in the big leagues for the Mets in
2002 after a three-year hiatus. His card from the 2001 Choice Norfolk Tides set
is shown here. An interesting Japanese sticker is among the cards pictured
below the stats box. Nearly two decades
after his last big-league appearance with the Mets, he rejoined the team,
becoming the first-base coach in 2021.
