Respected Yankee star who finished up with
the Mets in 1962. Five times posted on-base percentages of greater than .400.
Pictured here on his 1954 Bowman card; note the reversed orientation of the
photo (the Yankees logo is backwards and on the wrong side of his uniform).
Gene's other 1954 card is pictured below. Other cards depicting the many years
of his career are shown below as well; even though he was forty years old, the
early Mets could have benefitted from his kind of production.

This is a list of the cards of this player that
I had in my Mets collection before I transferred the ownership of said
collection to another diligent and capable Mets fan. The cards that are listed
in light gray print and struck through are cards that were sold for charity
prior to my divestiture. The cards
listed in white text are the ones that still remained until that final
deal. Items listed in green I kept out
of the deal, just so I'd have something to display in my office and den. At the bottom and listed in orange text are
cards that I picked up after the dealing was done, in order to maintain a
certain continuity at this site; that is, so I'd have a card to show you at the
top of the page, and maybe in the autographs and game-used areas. If an orange card is struck through, it has
also departed the collection. I’m still
accepting donations, should you feel so moved.

"His youngest daughter
(my mom) was born during a N. Y. Yankees game, and they announced it over the
speakers. This was July 30th, which happened to be Casey Stengel's birthday
as well. Upon hearing this, Casey came down the bench and told Gene, 'You
better name that girl Casey.' Of course you can imagine what my grandpa said
to that. But his wife really wanted to name my mom Casey. So they had this
huge fight, but my grandpa won. Then once my mom got ahold of the story as
she grew up, she decided to name me (her youngest) Casey, whether I was a
girl or a boy. So that's one cute story that my grandpa always loved to
tell." -- Gene Woodling's granddaughter Casey 4 |
