THE SEAson story |
||
The Mets’ third year saw them
win two games more than the past season, and claw
their way to within forty games of the National League title. For the third year in a row, the Mets
boasted a twenty-game loser, though it once again was not Al Jackson, who led
the team in wins for a second straight campaign. Ron Hunt became the first Met ever elected
to a starting position in the All-Star game, but the best batting line overall
belonged to outfielder Joe Christopher. Third sacker Charley Smith
became the second Met to have a 20-HR season, hitting that many exactly. The star slugger of the original ’62 squad,
Frank Thomas, added three more homers to his total before a mid-season trade
to the Phillies and departed as the all-time franchise home run leader with
52, as well as leading in most other slugging categories (RBI, SLG,
etc.). Ron Hunt passed the 1,000 career
AB mark in this, his second season, and assumed the position of the Mets’
all-time leader in batting average with his fine .287 mark. |
