THE SEASON STORY |
||
The New Yorkers followed up
their World Championship season with a year that was pretty good, but 1969
was a tough act to follow. Tom Seaver
fell from 25-7 to a still-respectable 18-12; Jerry Koosman likewise slipped,
from 17-9 to 12-7. The rest of the
staff was cumulatively underwater. The men with the bats in
their hands were dominated by four: Art Shamsky, Donn Clendenon, Tommie Agee,
and Cleon Jones-—four names that figured prominently in the ’69 championship
as well. Clendenon in particular had a
stunning season: In only 396 at-bats, he drove in 97 runs, which would be the
Mets’ highest mark for several years to come. Tommie Agee became the first
Met to crack the 30-stolen base ceiling, while Bud Harrelson broke new ground
with an astonishing 95 bases on balls.
Agee also set club records for at-bats, runs, hits, total bases, and on
the negative side of the ledger, strikeouts and times caught stealing. All in all, a fine season; he also won his
second Gold Glove award-—his first had come in 1966 with the White Sox. |
