THE SEASON STORY |
||
In 1971, the Mets matched
their mark exactly from the previous season.
The usual suspects were the main drivers for this squad, featuring pretty
good years from Cleon Jones and Tommie Agee, which expectation seemed to be
getting almost routine. Agee’s total
slash numbers for the three seasons of 1969-71 were .343/.466/.279 (formatted
as OBP/SLG/AVG, which is the way I learned it on the backs of 1980s Topps
baseball cards, with the batting average all the way to the right). Cleon’s four-year slashes looked even
better, at .372/.450/.304. Ed
Kranepool chipped in with his best season to date, tying the two outfielders
for the team lead with 14 homeruns each. Three pitchers led the way,
fronted by the fabulous Tom Seaver, who won 20 games for the second time and
had a league-leading 1.76 ERA, taking home the Cy Young award for the second
time. He had two relievers join him in
the under-2.00 ERA club, Danny Frisella at 1.99 and Tug McGraw at 1.70. The rest of the club was various shades of
mediocre. |
