THE
SEASON STORY |
||
The general aura of
mediocrity that threatened to overtake the team in 1973 before the miraculous
run to game seven of the World Series indeed overtook them in 1974. The positives: Cleon Jones
made something of a comeback, Rusty Staub continued his steady hitting, and
Ed Kranepool had the first .300 season of his rather long career in part-time
play. The pitching staff remained a
strength, as Seaver, Koosman, and Matlack were all fine, though the Mets’ ace
produced his weakest season to date with only 11 wins, and an ERA that went
above 3.00 for the first time. But the bottom line read that
the Mets finished twenty games under .500 for the season, and they were much closer
to the bottom than the top of the division. |
