THE
SEASON STORY |
||
There was a new slugger in
town, and he broke the Mets’ all-time record for homeruns in a season that
had stood since 1962: Dave Kingman, who was purchased around the beginning of
Spring Training for $150,000. He also
led the team in stolen bases with 7, as the New Yorkers drifted back into
their station-to-station strategy. Not
only the Mets HR record fell; Rusty Staub tallied the most RBI ever for a
Met, too, crossing the 100-RBI barrier for the first time. Felix Millan established new team highs for
games, at-bats, hits, and doubles. And
steady Eddie Kranepool had his finest season in the bigs, batting .323 for
the year. Tom Seaver won his third Cy
Young award with another brilliant season, and Matlack and Koosman were their
typical rocks. Not one, but two
pitchers had an ERA of 1.49 out of the New York bullpen: Bob Apodaca and Skip
Lockwood. All told, a solid season and
a return to a winning record. |
