THE SEAson story |
|||
Now, here was some
progress. For the first time in club history,
the Mets did not lose 100 games!
New catcher Jerry Grote, who had been obtained in a trade with
Houston, took control of the pitching staff, which was led by three
eleven-game winners, including Dennis Ribant, who recorded what was probably
the Mets’ best pitching season to date. The team had a kind of
growing competence about them-—nothing outlandish, just a sense that they
weren’t quite as bad as had previously been recognized. And there were rumblings down on the
farm. Young pitchers like Tom Seaver
and Jerry Koosman were working their way towards Shea, and Met fans were
treated to the late-season debut of a young fireballer named Nolan Ryan. And-—wonder of wonders-—for
the first time, the Amazins finished higher than last place in the NL. |
