THE SEAson story |
||
In this second season of the
return of National League baseball to New York, the pitching was a little bit
better than it had been the previous year, but the hitting virtually disappeared. The club batted .219 as a unit, nor did
they hit with any power to speak of.
Last year’s chief slugger Frank Thomas dropped from 34 home runs to 15
this time around; ex-Dodger
hero Duke Snider was right behind him with 14. Rookie Jim Hickman led the club with 17
long balls; no one else had more than ten. Former Milwaukee Braves
swingman Carl Willey had a pretty good year as a starting pitcher, and Roger
Craig and Al Jackson were their steady if unspectacular selves. Craig lost more
than 20 games for the second consecutive season, but Jackson tallied a
surprising 13 victories to lead the club. Besides Hickman, the Mets
boasted another significant rookie: second baseman Ron Hunt, who would finish
second behind Pete Rose in the Rookie of the Year voting. The Mets won eleven more
games than they had in 1962, creeping over 12 games closer to first place,
but they still finished 15 games behind their nearest competition, their cohorts
from the expansion draft, the Houston Colt .45s. |
