THE SEASON STORY |
||
For the third consecutive
season the Mets finished in the cellar of the NL East. The season followed the established Met
pattern of solid pitching, faint hitting, and little (if anything) more to
hope for in the near term. The
starting outfield of Lee Mazzilli, Steve Henderson, and Joel Youngblood was quite
adequate, but there was not much contribution from the rest of the hitters;
the entire club tallied only 74 longballs all season. The pitchers were led by a solid season
from reigning ERA champion Craig Swan, but the only others on the staff to
post as many as 100 innings were Pete Falcone and Kevin Kobel. The team avoided losing 100 games only by
winning their last six games in a row, which felt like a great moral victory
for the moment. Tangentially related to these
developments: St. Louis first baseman Keith Hernandez was claiming half of
the NL MVP award along with the Pirates’ Willie Stargell. Keith would of course become a much bigger
part of this story in a couple of years. |
